All cities grow without discipline. In a land where family planning has failed we cannot expect disciplined urbanization. Buildings are spouting everywhere and their growth is beyond anybody’s control. So the surroundings of your house, which are so very important to Vaastu, are nothing more than a concrete jungle. Moreover the rules of the municipality, however funny have to be adhered to even in the name of God you cannot ask the municipality to be flexible.
The tenets of Vastushastra deal chiefly with the macrocosm. The entire universe is taken in to account. But logically Vaastu should be effective at the micro level as it work more on individual than premises I mean to say, if the exterior cannot be changed concentrate on the interior. For example if the road is in the south of the plot, there is no need to reject the plot. It is all right just sees to it that the interior compensates for the limitation.
This solution is a product of a rather extensive survey done on many dwellings. The results are based on the health and prosperity aspects seen in the surveyed homes with different levels of compliance with Vaastu. Some houses had the right positioning of the entrance but the water body seemed to care two hoots about Vaastu. Some houses had the kitchen carefully positioned but the windows only seemed to suggest that the inmates were Peeping Toms. Every household was asked to come out frankly with the domestic state of affairs. The health and financial standings were noted along with the tenets obeyed.

It was interesting to note that there seemed to be a Weightage factor in Vastushastra. This is to say that the some rules in Vastushastra might be more important than others. As we all know by now, it is almost impossible to comply in totality with Vaastu in a city. This means, in a house there are going to be obeisance to Vaastu and also violation of the same. This articles deals with identifying and increasing the positive elements so that the negative elements are counterbalanced.
This ‘finding’, as I call it, may make Vastushastra more confounding but definitely solves a lot of problem for the city dwellers. Most people know which direction is ‘the best’. But logically, if Vaastu is as scientific as people want to believe, there should be a ‘second best’, a ‘third best’ and so on. At the micro level we have to identify the relative status of each direction keeping in mind the function of the room. The benefits and risks of each location have to be short-listed. A huge building is blocking the Northeast direction. It is a major problem according to ‘conventional’ Vastushastra. But there is nothing that can be done about it. Praying for the building to sink and collapse is not a holy thought. So there is no point bothering. Concentrate on your interiors. There could be some features inside your house that need more attention than the building across the street.

The reason why I feel that Vaastu could be effective at the micro level is that the microcosm is nothing but a small confined extension of the macrocosm. Imagine, you wake up one fine ‘morning’ and find that it is all dark. Your watch is working, the cockerel is wailing, every body is up. It is ‘morning’ but the sun has gone on a vacation to some other galaxy. If this vacation is going to be a reasonably long one, life on planet Earth would come to an end. But at the same time imagine a man imprisoned by some sadist in an underground dungeon. It is as dark as darkness can be. If he is given food and water he would probably live on for years and years.
This is to say that however formidable the walls might be the essence of the sunrays, reach every nook and corner of the dungeon. Similarly wherever you go, even miles below the sea, or eve to the core of the Earth, your compass, if it is working, would shows north correctly. This shows that the magnetic field of the Earth acts on every inch of the planet. What am I trying to say? Just this, if Vaastu stipulations took the surroundings and nature on the whole into account, we do not stand to lose much if the topography is not as per Vaastu provided our interiors are designed to absorb the outside world.
